Race #316 – Branford Rotary YMCA Thanksgiving 5k – Branford CT – 11/26/15

2015-branford-LOGOThanksgiving Day is the most popular holiday for races and this year was a family affair for me as I joined my daughter Nicole and granddaughters Eva and Ella for the local turkey trot near their home in Connecticut. Eva, who just turned 7 a couple days after Thanksgiving, and 3-year-old Ella ran their first race ever in the kids run and they both did great, lining up and taking off from the starting line like two old pros. Eva finished in the top half (46th of 109) of all the runners in the kids run and Ella was 1st place among 3-year-olds listed in the kids run results. Rumor has it that Ella may have taken a shortcut, but regardless, they had a great time running and we had an even better time watching them enjoy their first race.

Eva was all smiles during the kids run!

3-year-old Ella zoomed around the course like she’d been doing it her whole life!

If you know my running history, it was Nicole who had encouraged me to get in shape back in 2008. At that time I was 40 pounds heavier than I am now and we talked about the possibility of me getting in good enough shape to run a 5k. At age 56 I managed to torture myself through my first 5k in September 2008 and decided that I’d like to keep it up for as long as I can. Of course, that was more than 300 races ago and these days, at age 63, I feel better than ever. One can never be certain at any age when the race they’re running may be the last, so I try to appreciate every run, no matter how fast or slow.

For Nicole it was only her second race. She had run a 5k race with me back in January 2010 without any training and finished in 27:54. This time around she managed a PR with a time of 27:25, pretty amazing for a 41-year-old lady who still only goes for a casual run “about once a week.” Joining us in the 5k was also Nicole’s friend Andreina, who was also running in her first race ever and did a great job, finishing in under 30 minutes.

My son Joe volunteered for coat-holding duty and babysitting during the 5k.
