Race #378 – It Takes a Village 5k – Newton, NC – 05/20/17

With a special $15 entry fee for runners 60 and over, Linda and I decided to head up to Newton for the “It Takes a Village 5k,” which is held at the Abernethy Laurels retirement community. It was a fun race that was well organized by the always efficient Kelly Stewart of RunTime Races, and the retired residents from the community supplied most of the volunteers.

It was a hot and sunny day, and with the race starting at 10:00 a.m. it was pushing 80 degrees by the time the race began. Sunny and hot always appeals to me more than dreary and cold, so even though I may be slowed down by the heat like everyone else, it’s still what I prefer. I did manage to get back under 24 minutes this week with a time of 23:31, and I’m hoping I can stay there for a while and maybe even get back under 23 minutes, but we’ll see.

I was proud of my wife Linda for running. It was one of her few races lately and she came in 2nd in the 60-64 age group. She’ll be going to the 65-69 age group in about two months.
