Race #373 – Bunny Run 5k – Concord, NC – 04/15/17

After three half marathons over the past three weeks it was nice to take a break and dial it back to a 5k this weekend. This was my fourth trip back to the Bunny Run, which I first ran in 2009 (Race #27), and it’s always been fun. The course has changed since I first ran the race. It starts in downtown Concord and the first mile goes down the big hill that makes the Santa Scramble so fast. The second mile is mostly flat along the greenway, then it’s payback time in the third mile where you have to climb all the way back up to town. Unfortunately I forgot my Garmin and didn’t realize it until I was about 30 miles from home, so I ran without a watch. I don’t think that had much effect on my running but it does mean that I don’t have many of the statistics I usually report about races (weather, elevation, heart rate, etc.).

Race Number:  373

Race Name:  Bunny Run 5k

Location:  Concord, North Carolina

Date:  April 15, 2017

Race Rating:  87

Winners (Top 20 Overall):

Course:  The first mile is mostly downhill through city streets, the second mile is mostly flat along the greenway, and the third mile is mostly uphill on a combination of greenway and city streets. Even with the tough third mile it’s still an enjoyable course for me.

Race #369 – Belmont Abbey Rail Trail 5k – Belmont, NC – 03/11/17

Contrary to the implications in the name, the Rail Trail 5k is actually all on the paved streets surrounding the Belmont Abbey campus. It’s the second race in the Gaston County YMCA series and close to home so I like it. It’s practically flat except for just a couple small hills near the turnaround on the out-and-back course so it’s pretty fast.

There’s nothing fancy about it but the post-race food was good this year and included hot chocolate and pastries and other good stuff from “The String Bean,” a popular local restaurant. The tech T-shirts were nice as well but awards for the age group winners were kind of pathetic — only a cheap medal for 1st place only in 10-year age groups. Uh, somebody should have a talk with the race director to let them know we appreciate our cheap medals 3-deep.

Race #368 – Corporate Cup Half Marathon – Charlotte, NC – 03/04/17

Now in its 37th year, and Corporate Cup is one of Charlotte’s most established races. It’s also one of the biggest with well over 3,000 runners combined in the half marathon, relay, and 5k. The venue is the Wells Fargo Atrium in uptown Charlotte, which provides a cozy atmosphere if the weather’s cold in early March, and this year it was a chilly 36 degrees at the start of the half marathon.

This was my first race in the 65-69 age group so it’s nice to once again be one of the young guys in the group. One kind of sad phenomenon of aging runners is that the older you go in age groups the fewer the number of runners you compete against. I’m all for placing in the top 3 in my age group but it’s a little sad that out of more than 800 finishers in the half marathon there were only 5 who were in the 65-69 age group. I think most real runners want to keep going for as long as they can but for one reason or another (injuries and sickness mostly) there is a huge drop-off by the time a runner reaches their 60s. I’m hoping to keep going for many more years but only time will tell if that is a possibility. Other than being a bit slower I’m still doing okay though, so for now at least I’m thankful to still be hanging around.

Race #365 – Hearts-a-Bustin’ 5k – Belmont, NC – 02/11/17

After avoiding trail races for years, I finally decided since it was the first race in the local YMCA race series I’d go ahead and run my first single-track trail race ever, and I’m happy to say I didn’t break an ankle or do a face plant. Having come out without any scrapes or bruises I’ll count it as a success, although I still favor running on pavement and this could have been my last trail race as well as my first. It was nice to get out again with all of the friendly runners who compete in the YMCA series, and I’m looking forward to the series this year although my schedule already has me missing one or more races because of conflicts so I’m not likely to be one of the top competitors.

The race is held on the trails surrounding the famous Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and a ticket for free admission to the garden is included with the race entry fee. Since I’m a nature photography enthusiast and the garden is just 5 miles or so down the road from my house, I’m a season pass holder and visit often. It’s not peak season now for the garden but it’s still a great place to visit, especially for a couple who are celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Race #362 – Joe Davis Run for Recovery 10k – Fort Mill, SC – 01/14/17

Held each January in memory of Joe Davis, a 28-year-old who lost his battle with addiction in 2009, this race has become one of the more popular winter races in the Charlotte area with more than 800 runners participating in the 5k, 10k, and fun run.

This year I ran the 10k, which is pretty much two loops of the 5k course. Given the option between 5k and 10k I usually choose the 5k, but I haven’t raced much since cold weather arrived and figured I could use the extra racing miles. I knew ahead of time that the fastest guys in the 60-64 age group would also be in the 10k so I wasn’t surprised to finish 3rd in the age group. My time was 47:45, and I was actually pretty happy to just run the race in under 50 minutes.

The family of Joe Davis (brother, mother, sister) always take an active part in this race.

Race #361 – Mt. Mourne VFD Elf 5k – Mooresville, NC – 12/24/16

This morning race on Christmas Eve was my last race for the year and it’s always a favorite cold weather race. Both pre- and post-race activities are held inside the warm Mt. Mourne Volunteer Fire Department building so it’s a great way to visit with fellow runners you haven’t seen in a while, and there’s always good food and hot coffee after the race as well as nice age group awards and door prizes after the awards. This year the door prizes weren’t quite as great as in past years, but that’s just a minor quibble. The race course is also a good one, with just some barely noticeable ups and downs along the way of the out-and-back course.

I was fairly happy with my time of 22:30 although it landed me in 3rd place in my age group, with 1st and 2nd being 12 and 11 seconds ahead of me. After giving it a little thought, it was probably not a great idea to take 3 walk breaks during the race. Ouch. With just a little more backbone I could have probably skipped the walk breaks and ran at least 15 seconds faster. Maybe I’ll remember that next time around.

Race #360 – Girls on the Run Fall 5k – Belmont, NC – 12/03/16

This was the final race of the season for the Gaston County YMCA race series and, as you might imagine, was overloaded with 4th grade girls from around the county. It’s a fun event, especially for the girls, but personally I’d prefer the race series wouldn’t be included with the three GOTR races in the county during the year. Nevertheless, everybody young and old seemed to have a good time. We ran the same course as just a few weeks ago at the BCO (Belmont Community Organization) Turkey Trot just a couple weeks ago, and it’s a nice course through mostly the side streets of Belmont.

I wanted to walk as I went up this hill near the finish, but my friend Kenny Primm was right on my tail so I decided a walk break might not be a good idea.

For some unexplained reason I ran my fastest 5k of the year in this race (22:01), only a week after running my slowest 5k of the year at the ChristmasTown 5k in McAdenville (23:36). No doubt that was a tougher race but most other runners were virtually the same speed in both races so I was a little surprised to do as well as I did, especially since my training and diet had remained the same during the interval between races.

The standard race awards were handed out after the race, followed by the awards for the Top 10 runners (male and female) in the Gaston County YMCA race series. I finished 2nd Overall Male for the season with 1,045 points, just behind Jimmy Glover who accumulated 1,060 points. Somebody jokingly (I think) referred to my 2nd place finish as “First Loser” but I was actually really happy to finish that high in the final standings, having completed the season without any major meltdowns or injuries. I’ll turn 65 this February and it’s unlikely I’ll finish as high as 2nd in the future.

It was only the third year of the local race series and I feel like local runners are fortunate to have it. For quite a few years I traveled to a lot of races out of the immediate area, partly for the excitement of doing a race in a new city or more exotic locale, but as I get older I appreciate the chance to get up on Saturday morning and drive just a couple miles to a local race that’s loaded mostly with friends that I know and run with regularly, so as long as I’m able to continue running this is most likely what I’ll stick with.

Race #359 – ChristmasTown 5k – McAdenville, NC – 11/26/16

000-christmastown5kNow in its fourth year, the ChristmasTown 5k in McAdenville has become one of the region’s top wintertime destination 5k races. The famous Christmas lights of McAdenville don’t officially come on until December 1st, but for this evening race runners and spectators are given a sneak peak as the streets are closed down and the millions of lights are turned on just for this event.

As you would expect, the Christmas lights provide plenty of illumination, but there are some areas where it’s hard to see the street so I carried a small flashlight that I used a few times along the way. To offset the beauty of the lights is the agony of the hills, and there are plenty of them. Except for crossing the bridge there doesn’t seem to be a flat spot in the whole town, so you’re either going up or down the entire way, or so it seemed to me.

I struggled to get up the hills, which is nothing new, but I partly made up for it by being a little faster on the downhills. As always, the best part of the race is when it’s over, and most of the runners gathered in the YMCA gymnasium for the awards and costume contest.

There was very little in the way of free post-race food (I was told bananas and water but I didn’t go looking for it). There were some people selling food so that helped a little, but it’s disappointing for a race (especially one of this magnitude) to not supply something decent. Hot chocolate and some decent free post-race treats would be nice.

Race #358 – Spencer Mountain 10-Miler & 5k – Gastonia, NC – 11/05/16

2016-spencer-mountain-startThe Spencer Mountain 10-Miler is one of my favorite local races and for many years has drawn runners who are looking for a tough challenge. It actually starts off completely flat, but about 4 miles into the race the fun starts. The last 6 miles are like a roller coaster, culminating in the biggest hill of all in the 9th mile, which is a 300-foot climb that lasts for most of that mile. The 10th mile flattens out, which is nice, taking you back to the elementary school in the Town of Ranlo where the race starts and finishes.

The race is only about a 10-minute drive from my house so I was able to leave home a little later than usual. I was pretty amazed as I reached the race site at how many people were there. Cars were parked a lot farther away than in the past. In previous years there had been fewer than 200 runners in the 10-miler and 5k combined. This year I was surprised to learn that the 5k was a Girls on the Run event so there were elementary school girls from all over the county participating, and of course their families were there to watch. There ended up being only 56 finishers in the 10-miler and a whopping 785 in the 5k, creating gridlock on the tiny 2-lane road around the school.

I started out this year’s race with a little bit of a knee issue and wore a brace on my right knee for the first time in several years. It really didn’t bother me much during the race and going in I was just hoping to finish in under 1:20:00, so I was satisfied with my time of 1:18:41.

I’m writing this blog entry 9 days after the race and, sorry to say, my knee problem has gotten worse instead of better during that time. I skipped the half marathon I had scheduled for the following week, and after running a few miles over the past week that seemed to exacerbate the situation, I’ve decided to take this entire week off of running in the hope that it will completely heal. I’ve never taken a whole week off of running, even when I’ve had injuries in the past, but it’s probably a good time to try it now and I’m hoping that will do the trick. If not I’ll end up scheduling a doctors appointment next week to get a better idea of what’s going on.

Me and Aaron Chan after the race.
Me and Aaron Chan after the race.

On the bright side, this race is part of the Gaston County YMCA series, which has been my focus for much of the year. It was my 10th race of the 15 in the series and only your top 10 race results are counted, so I’m okay if I don’t run any of the upcoming races through the end of the year. As a matter of fact, I did the math and I’m pretty sure that I’ll finish 2nd overall in the series no matter what. I can’t catch 1st place and I don’t think anybody below me can mathematically catch up with me. Of course, math never was my strong suit so maybe I’ll get a surprise before the end of the year.

Race #354 – Five Kahne 5k – Charlotte, NC – 10/09/16

2016-five-kahne-logoThis was the 7th year of Kasey Kahne’s 5k race but the first time I’ve run it. The venue is just outside the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Sunday morning, and the weather was near perfect after the skies had cleared from Hurricane Matthew, which had wreaked havoc for several days and caused most Saturday races across the state to be canceled.

Linda came along and ran her first race in a while, and we parked in the Hall of Fame parking garage, which was convenient but there was a five dollar fee for parking. The size of the race was quite a bit smaller this year with only 230 finishers as opposed to last year’s crowd of 325 finishers. I’m not sure why there was such a drop-off in participation, but it’s a great 5k with great awards and good free food provided by PDQ after the race.

2016-five-kahne-me-and-linda
My wife Linda came along and did great in the race! Happy to have her running again after some health problems that have kept her out of racing for a while.

One fun challenge in the race is that for everybody who beats Kasey Kahne to the finish line, he donates an extra $105 to the Kasey Kahne Foundation. Last year he finished in 22:39, and since that’s close to the time I’ve been running I was looking forward to the challenge of trying to keep up. Unfortunately the storm had caused the Saturday NASCAR race to be canceled so he had to be at Charlotte Motor Speedway at 10 a.m., the same time this race was being held. He had his trainer, Ryan, take his place at the race so he was the man to beat. I stayed fairly close to Ryan throughout the race but never was able to catch him. He finished in 22:01 and I was 19 seconds behind him at 22:20 so I missed the cut, but not by a lot.

Of more concern to me was my own age group, 60 and over. As usual for me lately, I started taking walk breaks around a mile or so into the race. There’s a climb up a portion of the famous hill on Morehead that I was walking, and I was passed by a runner whose shirt had a message on the back: “It’s only a hill. Get over it.” Not only was the message an inspiration, but there was little doubt that he was over 60 years old. I cut the walk short and tried to catch up, and as we crested the hill I was able to pick up enough speed to pass him. During the last half of the race I’d take a glance back occasionally, and even though I was able to open a gap of maybe 100 yards he was still there, and when I’d take another walk he’d catch up a little more. As much as I wanted to keep running, I didn’t quite have enough stamina to keep it up so I’d take another walk break, and each time he’d close the gap a little more. Lucky for me the finish line came when it did. I managed to hold him off by 8 seconds. I waited at the finish line for him and we gave each other a congratulatory fist bump. I thanked him for pushing me along, and he said he ran faster because of me.

The age group award for 1st place was a $100 gift certificate to the Charlotte Running Company, there was a great medal for all finishers, the T-shirt is one I’ll actually wear, and the post-race party and food was excellent. It’s a race I hope to continue running every year.
