Race #399 – Run Around Downtown 5k – Bessemer City, NC – 10/07/17

This was the 6th annual year of Bessemer City’s only 5k. I ran it last year when it wasn’t part of the YMCA series, and this year it was part of the series for the first time. The weather was great (except for the 100% humidity) but the crowd was small, with only 36 runners finishing the 5k. There were also quite a few participants in the 2k noncompetitive walk and those weren’t counted in the results.

There aren’t any big hills in this race but there seem to be subtle inclines and declines throughout the entire course so nothing seems entirely flat. I felt pretty good but I have a bad habit of walking up most hills. Lately I’ve been in a close battle for 2nd place in the YMCA race series with Andy Cook, who in every series race this year has been within two finishers of me, either ahead or behind. Several times in this race he passed me going uphill only to have me pass him as we went back down another hill. He had a 2 point lead on me going into this race and I was able to squeak past him and finish ahead this time, with another runner finishing between us, which resulted in us being tied for 2nd place in the series. Next week is another series race and it’s a hybrid of trail and road. I almost never run trails and Andy does, so look for me to definitely fall out of the tie for 2nd place next week, but it was nice while it lasted.

Current YMCA series standings (top 10).

Race #352 – Run Around Downtown 5k – Bessemer City, NC – 10/01/16

2016-bessemer-city-run-around-downtown-logoMy big race (Novant Health 15k) this weekend is on Sunday, but I decided to get up early Saturday to run one of the local 5k’s. Bessemer City is just a hop and a skip up the road so that’s where I landed. This was the 5th annual Run Around Downtown 5k and it’s a fun race so I was surprised at the small turnout. This year’s race had only 24 finishers as opposed to 49 when I ran it two years ago (2014). That year I finished in 20:26, which was only good enough for 8th place overall. This year the same time would have won the race by over a minute. Of course, I’m slower now and was happy with a finish time of 22:31, which was good for 3rd place overall.

I hope this race can continue despite the small turnout. Adding it to the YMCA race series would definitely more than double the turnout I’m sure, so I’m hoping that will be a consideration for the future.

Race #272 – Run Around Downtown 5k – Bessemer City, NC – 10/04/14

With some big out-of-town races coming up in the next few weeks I decided to stay near home this week and run this small local race (49 finishers). It was fun and actually seemed bigger since the 2k started at the same time as the 5k. The first mile was nearly flat but the 2nd and 3rd miles were fairly hilly on the side streets of Bessemer City. Despite the small size of the race there were quite a few fast runners there and I barely squeezed my way into the top 10, finishing 8th at 20:26.

I did enjoy the race and it was organized nicely, but I did have one beef: there was an extra charge for the T-shirt if you registered on race day. I understand if they run out of shirts at a race you might not get one, but I’ve never seen anybody charge extra for the shirt, especially since they were already charging an extra $5 for race-day registration. Not a huge deal for me personally since I’ve got more shirts than I want or need, but some people really want the shirt and it should be included in the registration price.

Pros:

  • Nicely organized small-town race.
  • Excellent timing services by RacingToes (results posted quickly at race and online).
  • Cool engraved plexiglass awards for 1st place age group (2nd and 3rd got medals)

Cons:

  • 10-year age groups.
  • Extra charge for T-shirts if you registered on race day.
  • No mile markers on course.

Race #125 – JAZ Alive 5k – Bessemer City, NC – 05/14/11

It took 125 races to do it, but this one will be immortalized, at least in the minds of Linda and I, as the race where we both won the Grand Masters trophies. With so few races even having a Grand Masters division these days (50 years and older), there are very few opportunities to win it, so it’s very likely it’s the first time and last time it’ll ever happen for us.

The JAZ Alive Memorial Scholarship 5k is held each year in honor of three high school students who died in an auto accident a few years ago, and the proceeds from the race go to a scholarship fund in their memory (JAZ stands for their first names: Jonathan, Amber, and Zachary).  It’s the type of small-town race I’ve been enjoying lately with no huge crowds, parking problems, or jockeying for position at the starting line. I wasn’t able to find results from previous years online and for that reason I’m not overly optimistic there will be any official results posted online for this year either. It doesn’t really matter though and I knew that coming in. I would estimate there were about 100 runners in the race, give or take 25.

I wasn’t aware that there were so many hills in Bessemer City, or maybe they just picked streets with hills for the route, but it seemed as though there was hardly a flat area the entire race. As we settled into the first half mile or so, the young kids fizzled out after their fast starts and I was able to count the runners ahead of me. At first there were five, but I soon overtook the two who were closest to me, and although the three ahead were slowly pulling away from me they were still close enough that I could see what was going on. Leading the race was Brad McKee, the young track coach at Ashbrook High School who recently ran cross-country for St. Andrews College. He was followed by my friend Josh Barron, who had won the Cherryville race a couple weeks ago and by Shane Wilson, the brother of Mike Wilson who is in our running club. I haven’t seen Shane a lot and I didn’t even know it was him until after the race at the awards, but those were the three ahead of me. It stayed that way throughout the race until the final hill, where one of the runners that I had passed at around the 1-mile mark zoomed past me up the final hill. I could see a crowd of people in the distance, maybe 200 yards away, and I hoped that was the finish line but I wasn’t sure. I took a look behind me and I could tell there was nobody else nearly close enough to catch me so I decided that it would have no effect on where I finished so I stopped and walked for 10 or 15 seconds, just long enough to catch my breath and then headed for the finish line, which was much closer than I had thought (I guess I didn’t need the walk break). I was happy with my 5th place finish and I could see on the list as I handed the volunteer my finish card that I had won the Grand Masters since nobody ahead was over 50 years old. Of course then, it was no surprise when they called out my name at the awards ceremony, but when they called out Linda’s name as the female Grand Masters winner we were both shocked and delighted… it’s definitely the stuff of which memories are made.

Note: If I can ever find the results I’ll post a link to them here or possibly post the entire results.
