Race #328 – Jack Adair Mile – Conover, NC – 04/14/16

It was a departure from my normal run up Crowders Mountain on Thursday evening as I joined in on the fun at the first Jack Adair Mile at Conover City Park in what I hope will become an annual affair. There were two heats, with the first being the “speed heat” with generally faster runners competing. Awards in the speed heat were for the top 3 overall males and females as well as top Masters (over 40). Two-time Olympian Anthony Famiglietti (aka “Fam”) took the top spot as he almost always does in local races with a blazing fast time of 4:21. On the girls side, 17-year-old Shelby Adair (granddaughter of Jack Adair) won with a time of 6:22.

2016-jack-adair-mile-richard-runningThirty minutes after the speed heat came the “general heat,” which had about twice as many runners (49 vs 26) and was for those who wanted to compete in their age groups or just test their own limits on the mile. I ran in the general heat and was just glad to slide in under 7 minutes with an official time of 6:56. The only other time I’ve run a 1-mile race was way back in June of 2009 at the Miles of Mooresville (Race #39) when I ran 6:32, so of course I’ve slowed down from age 57 to age 64… not a big surprise. I ran the numbers through an age grade calculator just now, and on an age-graded basis my equivalent time this year was actually a little bit faster (5:25 vs 5:22), so that’s encouraging.

This race was organized by RunTimeRaces in Catawba County. They’ve only been around for a year or so but from everything I’ve seen they’re doing a great job with the races they manage. An example of their unique approach is that they have special discount pricing in their races for runners 17 and under and also for runners 60 and over. It’s to encourage younger kids to become involved with running and racing, and to show some respect for older folks who still want to run races. Since I’m old, I’m all for it, but I think even if my age was somewhere in the middle I’d still respect their attempt to bring together all ages. What actually drew me to this race to begin with was that it was completely free for everyone over 60… Finally, a fringe benefit of getting older!

After the race there was pizza and sliced apples with some sort of delicious dip. I’m trying to stick with my diet right now so I avoided the pizza but on the way home I was wishing I would have scarfed up more of the apples.

I’m looking forward to making this an annual event for me. In addition to it being a lot of fun, it’s also a good indication of how my running is coming along from year to year. Unfortunately it’s probably my last year to run under 7 minutes in a mile race, but even with slower times there are always new challenges at any age.

Fam won the race in 4:21. As far as I could tell, his feet never touched the ground.
