Race #362 – Joe Davis Run for Recovery 10k – Fort Mill, SC – 01/14/17

Held each January in memory of Joe Davis, a 28-year-old who lost his battle with addiction in 2009, this race has become one of the more popular winter races in the Charlotte area with more than 800 runners participating in the 5k, 10k, and fun run.

This year I ran the 10k, which is pretty much two loops of the 5k course. Given the option between 5k and 10k I usually choose the 5k, but I haven’t raced much since cold weather arrived and figured I could use the extra racing miles. I knew ahead of time that the fastest guys in the 60-64 age group would also be in the 10k so I wasn’t surprised to finish 3rd in the age group. My time was 47:45, and I was actually pretty happy to just run the race in under 50 minutes.

The family of Joe Davis (brother, mother, sister) always take an active part in this race.

Race #261 – Fighting ALS with Jay 5k – Fort Mill, SC – 06/28/14

This was the 2nd annual “Fighting ALS with Jay 5k” held for Jay Tolar, who now lives in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Last year’s race was held in San Antonio, Texas, where Jay was living at that time. This year’s race was handled by Start2Finish Event Management, which with their great use of technology is becoming one of my favorites. Every race they’ve done that I’ve been a part of has been outstanding as far as timing, quick results, great finish line, etc., and this one was no exception.

Pros:

  • Nice size — Not too big and not too small (287 finishers).
  • Immediate printout of your race results as soon as you finish.
  • Nice finish on middle school track.
  • Nice medal for age group winners.
  • Finish line video for all runners posted on YouTube…

Cons:

  • No complaints other than the sound on the video (you might want to turn your volume down).

Race #202 – Joe Davis Memorial 5k – Fort Mill, SC – 01/05/13

It was 25 degrees when I woke up at 4 a.m. and I had no intention of racing since cold weather and I don’t get along. Then about 5:30 I noticed that the full “Prefontaine” movie was on YouTube. “Nice way to spend a cold Saturday morning,” I thought to myself. Well, that didn’t last long. A full 7 minutes and 29 seconds into the movie I was all pumped up, so I put on my running clothes and headed out the door.

This was the inaugural 5k memorial race dedicated to Joe Davis, who lost a battle with drug addiction a few years ago. The race was managed by Start2Finish, the same people who did a great job with the Huntersville Half Marathon recently. There were 474 pre-registered runners, which is quite a big local 5k, especially for this time of year. Of course a lot of people didn’t show up but there were still around 400 finishers.

I wore two Under Armour Cold Gear shirts with a singlet on top as well as tights (usual for me in the winter) and my light racing shoes. Gotta do something about the light shoes and regular socks. My feet were freezing throughout the race and are still feeling odd at 5 o’clock in the evening.

The race was kind of hilly and I was a little slower than my last 5k, but these days I’m happy with anything under 22 minutes. I finished in 21:47, just 7 seconds behind my chief-butt-kicker-of-late Bob Nelson, but I was actually happy to be that close to him at the finish since a few weeks ago he beat me by 38 seconds and I couldn’t see him at the end. This time around he was 19th overall and I was 20th overall. Not bad really for a couple of 60+ guys in a race with 400 people.

Race #10 – Springmaid Road Race – Fort Mill, SC – 11/15/08

We traveled south of the border (the South Carolina border that is) for the Springmaid Road Race. It started out as kind of a rainy day, which seems to be a recent trend, but there was no rain and a pleasant temperature of about 65 at race time. The 5k and 10k races started at the same spot at the same time. The first mile of the 5k route was mostly downhill, which was nice, but of course you gotta get back up to the same elevation eventually so the 2nd and 3rd miles took care of that with some big hills.
For Linda and I, it was our 10th race in the ten weeks that we have been running. There are certain things that remain the same from race to race but every race seems to have some unique elements of its own and we’ve enjoyed every one of them.

There was a professional photographer at the race named Steve Mills and he has posted several hundred photos (much better than the ones I took) on his site. He told me that you can download any that you like for free and if you want larger prints just contact him and he’ll supply them at a very reasonable cost…
There was one disappointing thing about this race: It’s the first one we’ve been to that only gave an award for 1st place in each age group — nothing at all for 2nd or 3rd. Linda and I were fortunate enough to both get 1st place in our age group (55-59 Male & Female) so we can’t complain, BUT if we had been 2nd or 3rd I think we would have been a little bummed about it. Also, instead of something to remember the race by (a medal, trophy, etc.) the prize was a $20 store credit at a local running store. We stopped by the store and used the credit on the way home since it’s not too close to home, and we got some nice stuff with our $40 credit but we would have probably been happier with a medal.
Race Rating:
  • 6 — 4/6 Number of Participants (4 for less than 100; 6 for 100 or more)
  • 7 — 1-10 Awards (Quality of medals, trophies, etc.) (1 to 10)
  • 6 — 1-10 Awards Presentation (PA system, stating winning times, etc.) (1 to 10)
  • 5 — 1-10 Food for Race Participants (1 to 10)
