Race #434 – Pardee Apple Festival 8k – Hendersonville NC – 09/01/18

This was my third year in a row to run this great 8k race that is held on the same weekend as the huge Apple Festival in Hendersonville. By the time the race is over the festival is getting going, and it’s one of biggest fall festivals in Western North Carolina.

This is not a big race but it’s not small either, with 240 finishers in the 8k and another 100 or so in the 5k. I’m a fan of medium-sized races like this one. It’s big enough to feel substantial but small enough that I can find folks I know and not get completely lost in the crowd, and it’s great to park near the start and finish line.

The 8k course isn’t flat but not nearly as hilly as you might suspect since it’s in the mountains. Elevation gain was measured by my Garmin as 269 feet in the approximately 5 miles.

As for me, I won my age group but was more than 4 minutes slower than last year. In sixteen 8k races I’ve run over the years it was only the second time I’ve finished in over 40 minutes, and the other time was a race where I got lost and ran more than a mile off course. At that race I was only 3 seconds slower than this one.

Instead of a regular T-shirt, the shirt this year was a really nice dark blue Brooks singlet (tech material)… Something I’ll actually wear!

One of the great perks in this race is that members of the Camera Club of Hendersonville take race photos and they’re posted on the festival Facebook page and can be downloaded for free. If you’ve ever purchased race photos, you probably know that the cost of one or two pics can easily be more   expensive than the entry fee to the race. I met one of the photographers (Bob Coffey) at the race and he was kind enough to give me his card and told me to send him a note and he’d send me the pics he took of me. As I write this on Wednesday morning following the race I still haven’t seen the photos posted online, but once they’re up I’ll provide a link below.

Race #391 – Pardee Apple Festival 8k – Hendersonville, NC – 09/02/17

This was my second trip to Hendersonville for this race that starts and finishes at the Pardee Medical Office Building on the campus of the Pardee Hospital. It’s held every year in conjunction with the Hendersonville Apple Festival, so if you run the race and you’re in the mood for a street festival you can take it in right after the race. Linda and I went after the race last year and it’s huge; so crowded that I decided not to mix it up with the festival crowd this year.

The 8k and 5k races begin together before the races split off in different directions. This year there were 228 finishers in the 8k and 117 in the 5k.

Just like last year, there were quite a few photographers taking pictures and several hundred free and professional quality photos are available on the race page on Facebook.

My recent weight loss of 10-15 pounds (it seems to vary day-to-day) seems to have done the trick as I bettered last year’s time by over a minute (36:01 this year compared to 37:18 last year). I’m trying to drop another 5 pounds or so in hopes of having at least one more decent year of racing.

Race #347 – NC Apple Festival 8k – Hendersonville, NC – 09/03/16

Apple-Festival-8k

Due to some last minute changes in my plans I ended up at the NC Apple Festival 8k in Hendersonville this weekend. It’s a well organized and well established race that’s part of the huge festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. There were around 500 runners in the 8k and 5k combined, and the hills weren’t nearly as bad as I imagined they would be in this mountainous area.

It’s no surprise that I ran my slowest 8k ever at 37:18, but I was actually pretty happy with the result since I’ve been running dismally slow lately. I still felt the need to walk a lot, but even with that still managed a pace of 7:31 for the roughly 5-mile race.

There was a small army of photographers with fancy DSLR cameras snapping photos everywhere you turned, and I’m not sure how many will be available, but the ones I’ve found so far (about 300) are free to download from Facebook. CLICK HERE FOR THE FACEBOOK PICS.

I'm not sure I've ever looked worse in a picture... but I kinda like it on some oddball level. Not sure what I was thinking, but I wasn't actually mad at anybody.
